Jazz bands can vary considerably in size and instrumentation, but typically consist of a rhythm section (acoustic bass or bass guitar, drums, guitar and piano) together with instrumental soloists which might be any combination of woodwind and brass instruments (eg. clarinets, saxophones, trumpets and trombones). Jazz bands can play a wide variety of jazz music, but repertoire will always include a number of jazz standards. A key part of learning in a jazz band will be improvisation as each instrument will be given the chance to “solo”.
