Christchurch School of Music

Every year the CSM offers a number of scholarships in conjunction with the Christchurch School of Music Support Trust.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an audition and/ or on the statement by the student’s HOD/conductor in which the student’s attitude, attendance and contribution to the School are assessed. Auditions will be held in a supportive, low key environment to ensure that students are able to perform to the best of their ability. Every attempt will be made to ensure that the audition process is an enjoyable experience.

Rules

Scholarships are only available to current CSM students except for the Music Education Canterbury Scholarship and the John and Janet Emeleus scholarship

Students awarded a Scholarship in one year are not eligible to apply for scholarships in the following year.

Students must be available to audition on the selected date and all successful scholarship winners are expected to perform in the Scholarship Concert held in November

Scholarships may not be awarded if no suitable candidates apply.

The following scholarships are open to all students currently enrolled at CSM

The CSMST Robert Perks Scholarship for Strings
$360 towards CSM fees in the following year.
Set up in 1980 in honour of the School’s founder and begun by a generous donation from Mrs Helga Newson. It takes into account the overall musical ability and potential of the candidate. This scholarship is available to string players currently enrolled at CSM.
2019 recipient: Keina Rollinson, Cello
The Canterbury Philharmonia Scholarship for Woodwind and Brass
$200 cash prize and solo opportunity.
Set up in 1988 by the Christchurch Orchestral Society Inc. It is a cash prize of $200 and includes the opportunity to play as a soloist with the Canterbury Philharmonia. It is awarded in alternate years to woodwind/brass and strings. (2019-20 strings)
2019 recipient: Gavin Fleener, Violin
The CSMST Prue Cotton Memorial Scholarship for all instruments including voice
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
Set up in 1994 by friends and family of Prue Cotton in her memory. Prue was a former cello student at the School. Two Prue Cotton Memorial Scholarships are available each year and are open to current CSM students.

The Nancy Stewart Scholarship for Flute
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
Set up in 2013 by Nancy Lady Stewart to acknowledge the contribution of a flute player currently enrolled at CSM.

The CSM Support Trust Mark Hodgkinson Scholarship for Tuba or Trombone
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
The Mark Hodgkinson Scholarship is awarded each year to an enthusiastic trombone or tuba player currently enrolled at CSM.
2019 recipient: James Panckhurst, Trombone
The CSM Support Trust Jay Mann Scholarship for Double Reeds
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
Set up in 2016 in honour of CSM benefactor, Jay Mann, to acknowledge the contribution of an oboe or bassoon player currently enrolled at CSM.

The Marjorie Elizabeth Williams Scholarship for Junior Chamber Music
$360 towards CSM fees in the following year
This scholarship is open to current primary school CSM students. The winner will be expected to play in a CSM chamber group in the following year.

The Marjorie Elizabeth Williams Scholarship for Senior Chamber Music
$700 towards CSM fees in the following year
This scholarship is open to current secondary school or university CSM students. The winner will be expected to play in a CSM chamber group in the following year.

The CSM Support Trust Christchurch Savage Club Scholarship for Junior Strings
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
This scholarship is for string players in JSO and ISO who not only show great promise but also demonstrate a dedication to playing in their orchestra
2019 recipient: Ethan Zhou, Violin
The CSM Support Trust Christchurch Savage Club Scholarship for Junior Wind, Brass and Percussion
$200 towards CSM ensemble fees in the following year
This scholarship is for wind, brass and percussion players in an orchestra who not only show great promise but also demonstrate a dedication to playing in their orchestra
2019 recipient: Mia Yee, Trumpet
The CSM Support Trust Outreach Band Programme Scholarship
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
All applicants will be currently playing in the Outreach Band programme and will have shown dedication to their lessons and band and be playing at an advanced level for their age.

The CSM Support Trust Outreach String Programme Scholarship
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
All applicants will be currently playing in the Outreach String programme and will have shown dedication to their lessons and ensemble and be playing at an advanced level for their age.
2019 recipient: Hatsumi Yuge
The CSM Jazz and Rock Scholarship
$200 towards CSM fees in the following year
This scholarship is for Jazz and Rock musicians who demonstrate excellence in their music. This scholarship will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a Rock Band, Big Band or a Jazz Ensemble at CSM.

University of Canterbury Scholarship for strings in UC Christchurch Youth Orchestra
Full CYO fees in the following year
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding string player in the UC Christchurch Youth Orchestra and is awarded on the basis of an audition

University of Canterbury Scholarship for woodwind in UC Christchurch Youth Orchestra
Full CYO fees in the following year
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding woodwind player in the UC Christchurch Youth Orchestra and is awarded on the basis of an audition

Scholarships available ONLY to students not currently enrolled at CSM

The CSM Support Trust Janet and John Emeleus Annual Scholarship
$200 towards CSM fees.
This scholarship was established as a result of a generous donation from the CSM Patron John Emeleus and is used to enable a new student to enrol at the CSM who has a passion for music.
2019 recipient: Ruby Bentley
Music Education Canterbury Scholarship
$290 towards CSM fees.
A scholarship generously offered by Music Education Canterbury to enable a student not currently enrolled at CSM to participate in an ensemble.
