Christchurch School of MusicThe CSM school band programme is designed to ensure that any child at a participating school has the chance to receive an enjoyable and rewarding musical experience through learning an instrument and playing in a school band.
CSM outreach tutors are very excited to be initiating this new venture that is modelled on many successful band programmes in Auckland and Australian schools.
This first year of the school band programme in 2010, will commence with all Year 5 and 6 students at Beckenham School and all Year 4-6 students at Opawa School, regardless of their previous musical experience, being offered to learn an instrument and take part in a training band.
The vision is that in just four years by 2013, Beckenham and Opawa Schools will have over 120 children learning and playing in three 40-piece concert bands at each year level from years 5, 6 and 7/8.
Children learn the following instruments from CSM tutors: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, bass, guitar, keyboard, and percussion.
Children notify us of their top three preferences after a ‘blow test’ to have a go on these instruments. After an informal musical aptitude test we then match children to the CSM hired instrument that suits them best.
Children need to
Being part of a band can provide children with skills that will last a lifetime.
In addition to the obvious musical benefits, children involved in playing an instrument in a band programme benefit socially, physically and often academically. Children learn valuable team skills, and above all have fun!!
