Reuben Derrick

Reuben has been working professionally in New Zealand and Australia since 1997 as a freelance performer and music teacher. Recent performance highlights include performances at music festivals in Australia (the Now Now) and New Zealand (Bomb the Space, Wellington Jazz Festival, New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Festival) with Johannes Bauer, Jim Denley, Richard Nunns, Eugene Chadbourne, James Morrison, Greg Malcolm, Chris Abrahams and Jeff Henderson. These performances ranged from large conceptual improvising ensembles (The Splinter Orchestra) to spontaneously formed groups, from well rehearsed established units to solo improvisations. He has composed and performed in works for jazz orchestra and organ, as well as small ensembles. He is a member of new music ensemble Silencio, which recently performed works accompanying two art exhibitions, William Morris and Rita Angus.

In 2007 he recorded an album of solo improvisations on saxophone and clarinet, Peeping Behind the Bucket, and formed the group, The Crust.

This group performed original arrangements of compositions by Steve Lacy and recorded an album in 2008 following a successful New Zealand tour. In 2009 he spent a month in Sri Lanka with three other improvisers from New Zealand (one of these a native Sri Lankan) to collaborate with three traditional ritual artists. This ambitious project was a success and the group Baliphonics hope to do further performances in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. More recently Reuben played in several performances of a new composition for dancer and small ensemble, featuring improvisation between the musicians and dancer.

Recently he has been recording in outdoor soundscapes both solo and with groups. This particular project was extended during 2010 in collaboration with Dr Richard Nunns, who is an expert in traditional Maori instruments.

In 2000 Reuben graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium with a B.Mus in jazz (performance), studying with Gordon Brisker and Mike Nock. In 2009 he graduated from the University of Canterbury with B.Mus in performance with first class honours. Since 2006 he has been teaching saxophone, ear training, improvisation and ensemble at the CPIT Jazz School (Christchurch, New Zealand). In 2010 he  commenced a Master of music in composition focusing on composition through performance, in the form of improvisation.
