The saxophone is a popular woodwind instrument that performs in a wide variety of contemporary musical styles from music such as jazz or rock, to classical through its solo and ensemble repertoire, symphonic band and orchestral use.

Alto sax lessons for beginners start from approximately 9 years of age age and tenor sax from about 11. This is very dependant on the physical size of the student and their hand span. Soprano, and baritone saxophones are available for more advanced students for ensemble work. It is not necessary to have played clarinet prior to saxophone.

A number of saxophones are available to be hired to students enrolled in lessons. The allocation of the CSM hire saxophones will be decided from the information provided on the enrolment form so please fill it in accurately. Alto saxophone hire is for ONE YEAR ONLY, but soprano, tenor and baritone saxophones may be hired out for a longer period under certain conditions.

Beginner students will be asked to join the Junior Concert Band or Junior Saxophone Ensemble usually after the first semester. More advanced students have the options of the CSM Concert Band, the Saxophone Ensemble, Windpower, Windjammers & the Jazz Combos. All CSM saxophone students are expected to participate in the annual Showcase Concert as part of their lesson requirements. Stephen is happy to discuss brands and prices with those people interested in buying or hiring a saxophone.

The CSM is proud to also offer saxophone & clarinet lessons with Mark Walton. Mark Walton is a highly respected and popular figure in the Australian and New Zealand musical scene and widely acknowledged in many parts of the world as a leading clarinet and saxophone performer, inspiring teacher and charismatic musician. Lessons with Mark are a mixture of 'in person' and video-conferencing or Skype. Video conferencing facilities are available for use at the CSM.
