Christchurch School of MusicThe recorder is a great instrument for children to start their musical training on any time from 5 years old. It has a simple design and is an easy instrument for children to master.
Group and individual lessons are held on Saturday mornings. Lessons are usually 30-45 minutes long and are guaranteed to be fun and stimulating with a focus on enjoyment and building of skills and knowledge. Students need to bring a Yamaha descant recorder, a music stand and a clearfile for extra music.
Tutor books are loaned by the school throughout the year and need to be returned at the end of the year or when finished with in a tidy order. It's a good idea to make sure everything is well named and all students have a designated 'Music Bag' that will keep all the books, pencil, recorder and clearfile in tidy order. You can purchase a CSM Music Bag that has been specially designed for this purpose from the CSM office.
All students are given the opportunity to participate in informal concerts and a highlight of the year (chaotic, tiring but fun!!) is the CSM Annual Showcase concert. As soon as they are ready, the students have the chance to learn treble and tenor recorders and join a junior recorder ensemble. In this group, recorders are combined with tuned and untuned percussion for a bit of variety.
The pinnacle of the recorder school is the opportunity to audition for the CYRE, a top performing, highly professional group of young recorder enthusiasts, conducted by Neville Forsythe.
