Oboe

Oboes
Supervisor:
Keith Sayers

From the moment it gives the tuning A for the orchestra, the oboe assumes a central role in the woodwind section. Lying in range comfortably between the flute and clarinet, its distinctive voice is heard both in harmony with its companions and also frequently as a soloist within the ensemble. The oboe is an essential member of orchestras but also an important instrument in windbands, chamber music and musicals, as well as possessing a large body of solo literature from baroque to contemporary.

Beginners should preferably be able to read music, although previous experience on a wind instrument (such as recorder) is useful but not essential. A determination to succeed counts for more! With its comparitive rarity the oboe is always welcome in orchestras and ensembles, which students usually enter in their second year.

Oboes can usually be hired for two years. Although relatively expensive to purchase, they hold their value well.

Oboe tuition at CSM is usually on an individual basis (20 minute lessons), which produces the best results on what is acknowledged to be a difficult instrument, since it allows pupils to develop at their own pace. Individuals vary, but generally progress is such that beginners participate in the Showcase Concert for that year and usually in the Junior Symphony Orchestra soon afterwards.

During the course of tuition the material covered will include much of the repertoire to be found in the Royal Schools and Trinity College Guildhall syllabi. Exams can be taken at any time and level, though usually starting with Grade 4.

As students progress, longer lesson times will become necessary, which is catered for within the CSM fee structure. Tuition can be taken to as high a level as the student wishes and is capable of. Many former pupils have their letters and some are now playing professionally.

As well as receiving tuition and participating in orchestras and ensembles students can join the well-known and highly regarded Double Reed Ensemble which performs several times a year both within CSM concerts and in outside recitals.
