Christchurch School of MusicAge 9+
Have fun and learn the flute! Popular, versatile, affordable, readily portable, and unparalleled for its expressive colour and the sheer beauty of its clear bellbird-like sound.
Children from about nine years onwards are big enough to manage the flute comfortably but we have an Early Start Flute programme for children as young as six or seven who use a flute with a specially adapted headpiece. Beginning students progress quickly, their faces aglow with the pride and enjoyment as they entertain friends and family with a variety of tunes after a few weeks of lessons. Participation in orchestras and bands normally begins in the second year.
Learning the flute should be an enjoyable and enriching experience. We use attractive and modern tutor books that incorporate the best methods derived from leading flute teachers and academies in Britain, Europe, North America and elsewhere. We do not adhere to the dictates of any one school or philosophy. Our programme follows the curricula of internationally recognised examining bodies.
All beginner flute students, regardless of age are taught to use both eye and ear. They are taught to read music and to understand the structure of music from the beginning. This not only enhances their ability to memorise (we remember more what we understand better) and play expressively but most importantly students who are able to read music become complete musicians because they can join with others in producing the harmonies that make up an orchestra, band or flute ensemble. The School has hire flutes for beginner students.
