Christchurch School of MusicAge 8+
The clarinet enjoys great popularity for many reasons. It is a wonderfully versatile, portable and readily playable instrument that can be found in almost any group playing most styles of music.
Once the art of blowing is mastered, progress is generally rapid. Placement in an orchestra, symphonic band or clarinet choir is assured in the second year. It is true that those who have learned to read music or play the recorder clarinet will find progress more rapid initially but it is not a prerequisite for signing on.
It is generally accepted that 8 is the minimum age at which people should consider playing the clarinet as hands are just too small below this level. A limited number of hire instruments are available for first year players and these require reeds which retail at music shops for approx. $2.00 each. Each reed lasts between 4 and 6 weeks depending on the amount of playing done.
The CSM is proud to also offer saxophone & clarinet lessons with Mark Walton. Mark Walton is a highly respected and popular figure in the Australian and New Zealand musical scene and widely acknowledged in many parts of the world as a leading clarinet and saxophone performer, inspiring teacher and charismatic musician. Lessons with Mark are a mixture of 'in person' and video-conferencing or Skype. Video conferencing facilities are available for use at the CSM.
