Christchurch School of MusicThe Viola is the "Cinderella" of the String family of instruments, combining the best qualities of the violin and the cello. It is larger than the violin and richer in sound, filling the string texture with warm harmony and melody. There is generally a shortage of good viola players, consequently the opportunities for rapid progress through the orchestras are good. We welcome all ages and have a range of Viola sizes to suit from 6 years to adult. Some hire instruments may be available for an extended period. Some famous people who played the Viola were J.S. Bach, Beethoven (who played professionally at one point in his career), Dvořák (professional violist), Mendelssohn, Hindemith, Jimi Hendrix (started his musical career on the Viola at an early age) and Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan.
