Christchurch School of MusicAge 7 to adult
With a wide range of over 4 1/2 octaves and a warm resonant tone, the cello is a very satisfying instrument to play. It makes a fine solo instrument, is a valued member of various chamber groups, and provides the foundation for the string section of an orchestra. Children find the cello comfortable to hold and play.
Students may commence lessons at about the age of seven. The School has a wide range of cellos available for hire. If good progress is made, an instrument may be available for more than a year. However students are encouraged to obtain their own instrument as soon as possible.
Age 4 to 7
This is an innovative forward-looking and flexible programme for younger children drawing on resources and material of Sheila Nelson, Phyllis Young, Paul Rolland and Margaret Rowell plus others. An early start is advantageous in establishing good natural posture, and freedom of bowing and left hand technique. Age four to five is recognised as a vital age in pitch development. Notation is introduced from the start to enable a smooth transition to orchestral playing. Parental support is vital for younger starters.
