Christchurch School of MusicA most enjoyable and rewarding way of making music, Chamber Music encourages all forms of musical development. Because of the small numbers of players involved (between three and eight participants), students are able to listen more intently to intonation, rhythm and phrasing, and work towards improving these aspects as well as developing ensemble skills. Reading ability is enhanced - each player has a separate part, and therefore has to be self-reliant. Musicianship is developed - players within the ensemble can express themselves more freely than is possible within an orchestra.
In order to be able to cope with the technical demands of the music, string and wind players need to be at least grade 5 and pianists grade 6. Special consideration will be given to promising young players with good reading ability.
Chamber music groups are invited to participate in recitals and concerts given during the year and those groups whose members all attend secondary school are encouraged to enter the Secondary Schools' Music Contest.
Chamber music tutorials and rehearsals are held on weekdays, late afternoon, or on Saturday mornings. Groups are arranged by the Supervisor. However, with the Supervisor's approval, players of a similar standard may form a group themselves.
